River shows character in win over Estudiantes in La Plata

Marcelo Gallardo’s team claimed a crucial 2-1 victory, with goals from Giuliano Galoppo and Nacho Fernández, despite losing Lucas Martínez Quarta to a first-half red card.
River came out determined and wasted no time: less than a minute in, Maxi Salas surged down the left, beat his marker, and delivered a dangerous cross into the box. Six minutes in, Giuliano Galoppo anticipated the defense and headed in Nacho Fernández’s excellent corner to open the scoring.
River kept pressing and, just a few minutes later, doubled the lead with a well-placed finish from Nacho. After an extended VAR check for a potential handball, referee Nicolás Ramírez reviewed the play and upheld the midfielder’s goal. The final minutes of the first half turned difficult for Gallardo’s side after Lucas Martínez Quarta saw red for a second booking.
In the second half, despite Estudiantes creating some dangerous chances and pulling one back late on, River stood firm, showed resilience, and held its lead to cap off a solid performance with a win in La Plata.
Gallardo’s team extended its unbeaten run in the Torneo Clausura with this result, staying on top of its group with 18 points from five wins and three draws. Attention now turns to Wednesday’s crucial CONMEBOL Libertadores quarterfinal first leg against Palmeiras at the Mâs Monumental.
