River claims big win in Venezuela

Eduardo Coudet’s side secured an agonizing win over Carabobo FC: it was decided in the final play of the match with a wonder goal from Maximiliano Salas and with Matías Viña in goal following the controversial red card to Santiago Beltrán. As a result, River Plate strengthened its position in Group H of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, climbing to the top of the standings with 10 points.

River will now look to secure its final standing in the upcoming home clashes with RB Bragantino and Blooming at the Mâs Monumental. It was an intense night for River, which failed to convert a penalty before halftime despite controlling the action and turning Lucas Bruera into one of the match’s key figures. In the second half, Maximiliano Meza headed home a Juanfer Quintero corner to put River in front.

Carabobo drew level with a penalty converted by Matías Núñez, before Beltrán was sent off following a controversial play and a VAR review. In the final minute of added time, Salas got on the end of a long ball from Facundo González and calmly slotted home for a dramatic 2-1 win in Venezuela.
