River books quarterfinal spot after epic clash
River beat San Lorenzo in a penalty shootout after a last-gasp equalizer made it 2-2 in the dying seconds of extra time, booking its spot in the next round of the Apertura.
Sunday night at the Mâs Monumental was packed with emotion and drama. River battled until the very last moment to secure a memorable qualification. After falling behind in the first half, the hosts equalized in the second through a brilliant Marcos Acuña strike set up perfectly by Juanfer Quintero. River continued to press for the winner, but the match remained tied after 90 minutes and headed into extra time.
San Lorenzo went ahead in the first half of extra time with a headed goal from a free kick. But in the dying moments of the second extra-time period, Quintero whipped in a cross that bounced in the box and beat the goalkeeper, forcing a penalty shootout.
With an outstanding Santiago Beltrán and a historic comeback after missing two penalties, Eduardo Coudet’s side secured a place in the Apertura quarterfinals, which will be played on Wednesday at the Mâs Monumental.
