In the first leg of the CONMEBOL Libertadores quarterfinals, the Brazilian team claimed a 2-1 victory. The second leg will take place in São Paulo next week.

While River came out strong in the first half, the away team took the lead with a Gustavo Gómez header off a corner kick. River then struggled, and Palmeiras created dangerous chances, which Franco Armani managed to keep out with some key saves. Just before halftime, Vitor Roque struck to make it 2-0.

Gallardo’s team came out with a different mindset after the break, and the game was played in the opponent’s half, although clear chances were scarce, apart from a Sebastián Driussi header and a long-range shot from Marcos Acuña. Lucas Martínez Quarta pulled one back in the closing minutes, and Miguel Borja came close to an equalizer that never materialized.

Following Saturday’s clash with Atlético Tucumán in the Torneo Clausura, the second leg is set for Wednesday in São Paulo, with River looking to reverse the tie and advance to the CONMEBOL Libertadores semifinals.
