In the first 45 minutes, River was far superior: dominating on the rival's half of the pitch and making short passes, the team took advantage of Vélez’s mistakes and gradually created danger. Pablo Solari threatened with a crossed right-footed shot and the home team had two shots on goal by Lucas Pratto and Gianluca Prestianni (Franco Armani reacted well by the near post); then, Leandro González Pirez blocked an attack after a clearance mistake.

With Andrés Herrera constantly running up the right wing, Miguel Borja, Nacho Fernández and Esequiel Barco had the best chances to score, but Gastón Gómez reacted well to save each shot and not concede any goals. River set the score at 1-0 with a left-footed shot from Robert Rojas, who couldn’t beat Gómez at first but scored off the rebound for the deserved lead. Vélez dared to do more, and Lucas Janson had a chance, but his shot went high.

In the second half, Vélez attacked first with a shot from outside the box and a header from Pratto that deflected away. Pratto then tapped the equalizer home for Vélez following a run up the right wing. Taking advantage of the momentum, the home team had another chance when Diego Godín struck a header that went just wide of Armani's right post. In the counterattack, Solari struck a cross that was intercepted by Lautaro Giannetti. No. 36 was also close to scoring with a left-footed shot in front of the goal, which was saved by Gómez.

Around the 65th minute, with River fully invested in the attack, the home keeper saved a shot from Nacho from outside the box. Finally, Solari crossed a header that was deflected away on the line by Godín and, ten minutes before the end, Lucas Beltrán perfectly headed a cross from Herrera, setting the score at 2-1. Nonetheless, Vélez evened the score again thanks to Francisco Ortega. With this draw, River has widened its lead by six points.
