River beats Banfield at the Mâs Monumental
On a special and emotional night, Marcelo Gallardo’s side claimed a 3-1 win on Matchday 7 of the Apertura Tournament. The goals came from Lucas Martínez Quarta, Sebastián Driussi and Joaquín Freitas.
Eight minutes in, Tomás Galván nearly opened the scoring with a volley inside the box that struck Facundo Sanguinetti’s right post. But in the 13th minute, Martínez Quarta rose highest to head home a pinpoint Ian Subiabre free kick, making it 1-0 and celebrating with an embrace from Gallardo.
Fausto Vera nearly made it 2-0, but his angled effort went just wide. Just before halftime, Mauro Méndez leveled for the visitors, while Driussi nearly restored the advantage moments later. River’s No. 9 found redemption after the break, reacting quickest to a rebound off the post from a Subiabre effort to put the hosts back in front. River sealed the result soon after, as Freitas marked his scoring debut—set up by Galván—to wrap up a 3-1 victory.
