Another key win to keep the momentum
River Plate defeated Estudiantes de Río Cuarto 2-0 this Sunday in Córdoba, on Matchday 12 of the Apertura Tournament. Eduardo Coudet’s team scored through Gonzalo Montiel and Maxi Salas in the second half.
River Plate dominated the opening 45 minutes, keeping control of the ball and creating danger from the wings, with Joaquín Freitas looking particularly lively up front. One clear chance came after a long pass from Lucas Martínez Quarta and a well-placed cross from Marcos Acuña into the heart of the box.
Later, Acuña came close with a free kick, and Aníbal Moreno had the clearest chance with a long-range shot that forced a strong save from goalkeeper Agustín Lastra.
In the second half, River stuck to the same game plan, with dangerous runs from Marcos Acuña down the left and Gonzalo Montiel on the right. The hosts found the net for 1-0, but the goal was ruled out for offside. A few minutes later, Facundo Cobos fouled Sebastián Driussi inside the box, and Montiel calmly slotted home the penalty to open the scoring.
Well set up to see out the game, River absorbed late pressure from Estudiantes, whose best opportunity fell to Siro Rosané, but his right-footed strike missed the target. Near the end, a superb pass from Juanfer Quintero set up Maxi Salas, who finished well to make it 2-0. The victory was River’s third in a row and temporarily sent the team to the top of the group with 20 points.
