River stepped onto the Mâs Monumental stadium determined to get back on track after the setback on Matchday 1. With changes to the starting XI, the first threatening play of the match was a good collective play followed by a dangerous cross from Santiago Simón on the right wing, which didn't reach any teammate. Later, keeper Guido Villar parried an involuntary header from Mauro Peinipil.

Barracas Central took the lead in its first threatening play, thanks to an own goal by Bruno Sepúlveda off a free kick. River went for the equalizer: Enzo Díaz scored a header, but the referee disallowed it upon VAR review, because the ball hadn't fully entered the goal. Nonetheless, River evened the score when Sepúlveda glanced the ball into the net, off a free kick taken by Nico De La Cruz. At the end of the first half, River almost took the lead when Miguel Borja made a good pass to Manuel Lanzini, who was alone but couldn’t set himself up.

At the very start of the second half, after a run up the left wing, De La Cruz sent a rebound into the upper corner of the net, setting the score at 2-1. Franco Armani reacted incredibly to save a header from Facundo Mater by the far post off a cross from the right wing. River dominated the game and was very close to scoring the third goal with a low right-footed shot from Esequiel Barco, which was saved by Villar. Rodrigo Insúa also had his chance to score with a left-footed shot that went just wide of the home goal.

Toward the end of the game, River capitalized on a counterattack and Pablo Solari tucked the ball into Villar’s right post, setting the score at 3-1. To top it all off, Salomón Rondón capitalized on a great assist from Nacho Fernández, setting the score at 4-1; finally, Solari scored the fifth goal of the evening. Thus, River has claimed its first Professional League Cup win of the season.
