Awaiting the start of the official competition (AFA tournament and Copa Libertadores), River’s squad travelled to Mendoza to play a friendly match against Independiente Rivadavia, at Malvinas Argentinas stadium, for the Toro Centenario Cup. El Millonario beat the local team by 5-3 in the penalty shootout, after matching 1-1 in the 90 minutes (with Carlos Auzqui’s goal, who went into the field in the extra time).

In the first half, el Millonario was protagonist, with Ignacio Fernández and Ariel Rojas as game leaders and creators. The clearest ones were a header made by Driussi (after Martínez’s free kick) and a jump from Martínez Quarta, in which the ball hit his shoulder and went diverted beyond the goalpost. Mora also had chances to score in good connection with his fellow team members and near the end of the first half, Milton Casco defined, one-to-one, after a center kick made by "Pity", though Aracena stopped the shot.

Already in the extra time, Independiente Rivadavia opened the scoreboard: in the 17 minutes, Sosa, one-to-one with Batalla, sealed the partial 1-0 (the forward of the team from Mendoza was sent off due to a double yellow card, since he took off his shirt while celebrating). Under the storm, Marcelo Gallardo’s team continued looking for the result and the tie arrived thanks to Carlos Auzqui, who had just gone into the field: the first ball he touched, after a corner kick, River’s reinforcement scored his first goal with the red sash.

On penalties, River excelled itself once more, the same as it had done the previous week in San Juan: Batalla stopped the shots from Encina and Fernández, Ponzio, Auzqui, Mora and Larrondo played their part for the series to end 5-3 in favour of The Greatest and to win once more a preparatory friendly match.
