River was left with no final in the penalty shootout. Marcelo Gallardo's team was more than superior and was twice in the lead, but after the 2-2, Gimnasia won 5-4 in the definition from the twelve steps.

In the first few minutes, River began dominating the ball and exerting pressure on the opposition. That's how the first dangerous situations arrived: a long pass from Leonardo Ponzio that Nacho Fernandez failed to connect and a header from the midfielder into the heart of the area that Martin Arias blocked.

Then, after good communication between Lucas Pratto and Enzo Perez, the 24th player barely reached Gimnasia's goalkeeper, who managed to block his right shot. In the next one, with a good free kick, Gonzalo Martinez scored the 1-0, after a weak response from Arias.

Gimnasia was quick to draw the match, through Lorenzo Faravelli, in its first approach to Franco Armani's goal. However, River was close to the second one, with approaches by Nacho Fernandez and Exequiel Palacios, in a one-on-one that was just deflected by the left post of the rival's goal. Gimnasia was left in numerical inferiority by the expulsion by double yellow of Ezequiel Bonifacio.

The second half came with Pratto's goal, after a very good definition and a great assist by Nacho Fernandez. In the next play, Armani covered a header from Maximiliano Comba, but River lost Javier Pinola by a direct red card in a stopped ball situation. El Millonario could have extended the advantage, with two very clear situations of Fernandez and Palacios.

The rival took advantage of their only approach of the second half and drew the match with a header from Santiago Silva. River had a clear chance to score the third one but had no aim (chances of Pratto, Ponzio, Palacios, and Borré) and finally, the encounter was settled from the twelve steps.

At this point, River was not able to reach the third consecutive final of "Copa Argentina". Gimnasia won (5-4) and was left with the classification.
