River Plate received Emelec for the fourth round of the Copa Libertadores, tournament in which it had won its three matches and, in this opportunity, it sought to reach the qualification to the round of sixteen with still two matches to go.

In a discrete first half, River controlled the ball, but could not hurt the away team. The first play of the match was at Bruno Vides’ feet, which kicked a deflected shot after a play through the right.

River answered with a long pass by Luciano Lollo and an accurate definition by Marcelo Larrondo, but the action was deemed null by the referee Anderson Daronco due to the offside position of River’s forward. The other one was a header from Carlos Auzqui, after a corner kick that went near Esteban Dreer’s goal.

In the second half, the trend of the match did not change. But it was Emelec the one to get the lead in the scoreboard, after a rebound that Ayrton Preciado caught in River’s area. However, el Millonario tied scores by means of a penalty scored by Rodrigo Mora, after a clear foul on Auzqui.

River could have kept the victory in additional time, when Auzqui struck a good shot on Emelec’s crossbar. With an immovable tie on the scoreboard, el Millonario qualified for the next stage of the highest continental tournament.

This Sunday, River will visit Boca Juniors, while on Thursday, May 18 it will visit Melgar, in Peru, for the fifth round of the Copa.
