River thrashes GELP and stays at the top River Plate beat Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata 4-0, with three penalty goals by Enzo Fernandez, Julian Alvarez, and Juan Quintero, and one goal by Braian Romero. On the next matchday, River will welcome Boca Juniors.

It was a very positive week for River, after beating San Lorenzo and Deportivo Laferrere, which was crowned by another win at the Monumental Stadium on Sunday. Playing skillfully and confidently, River was determined to win from the very beginning. After a penetrating play by Julian Alvarez and Esequiel Barco, the rival team threatened with two off-target headers by Cristian Tarragona. However, Gallardo's team took the lead thanks to a penalty kick brilliantly taken by Enzo Fernandez, awarded due to a handball by Tomas Muro.
Toward the end of the first half, Nicolas De La Cruz made a long-range shot to Barco, who received the ball in the box. When Rodrigo Rey, Gimnasia’s keeper, came off his line, he committed a foul on Barco. Julian took the penalty and sent a shot into the upper right corner, setting the score at 2-0. Right before the end, Robert Rojas almost scored the third goal, but his shot was saved by Rey.
El Millonario didn’t give in during the second half: it was well-positioned and dominated over Gimnasia. With on-target passes in the attack and good triangle passing sequence, River tried to corner its rival, which found it difficult to run up the field and threaten Franco Armani’s goal. Some minutes after Juanfer Quintero came onto the field, he set up Alvarez for a goal, but River’s No. 9 wasn’t able to dodge Rey in a one-on-one.
With River running up the field, Guillermo Enrique kicked Alvarez in the box when trying to clear the ball and committed a foul on him. Quintero took a great penalty, scoring River’s third goal of the night. Santiago Simon was close to scoring, but Rey made a low save on his crossed right-footed shot. Braian Romero also had his opportunity to score, off a perfect assist by Quintero, but the Gimnasia’s keeper blocked his shot. In the end, Romero finally scored off a rebound.
River has claimed all three points again and is one of the teams leading Group A with 13 points. It now has one week to get ready to play the Super Classic match against Boca Juniors, next Sunday at the Monumental Stadium.
