River stumbled in the south of Buenos Aires El Millonario had a good first half and had clear chances to take the lead, but Banfield took advantage of its chance in the second half and won 1-0.

As usual, River tried to mark its territory from the beginning of the match. However, after some quiet first minutes, the shots on goal started to come about: Luciano Lollo fired a header, which found Franco Armani in the right place. Then, el Millonario responded with a shot on goal by Julián Álvarez that was smoothly saved by Mauricio Arboleda. One of the clearest scoring chances was a good right-footed free kick by Nicolás De La Cruz, but it smashed against one of the goalposts.

Benjamín Rollheiser, in a good first half, was very engaged and had a chance to score by means of a good play from the right side toward the center and a left-footed shot that was saved by the home keeper. In another play, Gonzalo Montiel fired a good cross and Alex Maldonado barely prevented Rafael Borré from scoring the first goal. Álvarez almost scored an Olympic goal in the midst of all these attacks by River.

In the final moments of the first half, Borré was not able to score in a one-on-one move and, then, Armani blocked a right-footed crossed shot by Martín Payero. In the last play, after a good move by Álvarez in the box, Franco Quinteros almost scored an own goal, but his head clearance hit the crossbar.

In the second half, River didn’t have the dynamic of the first half, but it still threatened Arboleda’s goal. In the attack, Banfield had a few shots on goal and, in the 18th minute, set the score at 1-0, thanks to a shot by Juan Álvarez. Being at a disadvantage, el Millonario went for the equalizer, even though it faced some difficulties in the final meters. It had a good chance to score, by means of a shot by De La Cruz from outside the box that deflected wide.

River’s next match will take place on Wednesday, in Colombia, on matchday 3 of the CONMEBOL Libertadores Cup. As for the League Cup, River’s last match will be against Aldosivi at the Monumental Stadium.
