Marcelo Gallardo’s team defeated Urawa Red Diamonds 3-1 in the opening match of Group E of the tournament being held in the United States. The goals were scored by Facundo Colidio, Sebastián Driussi, and Maximiliano Meza.

In a historic debut in Seattle, River Plate came through in a tough match and kicked off the Club World Cup campaign with a smile. In the first half, after a handful of solid chances, Facundo Colidio capitalized on a perfect left-wing cross from Marcos Acuña and headed it home to put his team up 1-0.

Early in the second half, Sebastián Driussi was alert and intercepted a back pass to the goalkeeper, beating him with a header to make it 2-0. However, he was injured on the landing and had to be subbed off. A few minutes later, the Japanese team pulled one back with a penalty, but River stayed focused and remained in control of the game.

Maximiliano Meza rose above the defense to head in a corner from Acuña on the left, scoring the 3-1 that gave River Plate some breathing room. The team finished the match with confidence and secured a crucial first three points. River will now wait for the second match, scheduled for next Saturday against Mexico’s Monterrey Rayados.
