At the end of Argentina’s Football Superleague, River Plate faced Tigre at the Monumental stadium, after securing a place in next year’s CONMEBOL Libertadores Cup. The team from Victoria, on the other hand, needed to add points by three in order to maintain the illusion of not being relegated from the category.

The away team dominated during the first minutes: Walter Montillo had a clear opportunity, a front shot which passed just outside the right side of Germán Lux’s goalpost. Then, Federico González tried a header, but it went over River’s goalpost. River, on the other hand, responded with a cross-shot by Rafael Borré.

It was the Colombian forward who made a great move on the right and delivered a precise shot which allowed Robert Rojas to score his first goal for River by means of a good header. Tigre went looking for a tie with a high ball by Jorge Ortiz. Borré shot one too but it was stopped by Gonzalo Marinelli.

Lucas Janson’s powerful strike was saved by Lux and it hit the crossbar, but he managed to even the score in the next play: a lobbed header which hit a sidebar and went in. However, the last two attempts of the first half were made by el Millionario: Julián Álvarez kicked a high ball with his right foot and, later, Borré wasn’t able to head the ball precisely after a corner kick.

The second half was more even than the first one and the goals were slow to come. Cristian Ferreira threatened with a shot from the outside and then Santiago Vera gave a good header after Lucas Beltran’s cross. Vera had another chance by means of an individual play and a shot that hit Marinelli’s right sidebar.

Tigre got close to a tie through a shot by Juan Cavallaro which was saved by Lux. Then, Diego Morales made Tigre take the lead 2-1 by means of a nice right-footed crossed shot, but el Millionario quickly tied the score thanks to Hernán López, who caught a cross and scored straight into the net.

Beltrán had the chance to make the match 3-2, but Martinelli blocked the shot and Cavallaro took advantage of a rebound to finally make it 3-2. Thus, River Plate said goodbye to the Superleague and now awaits the Superleague Cup.
