River qualified for the Argentine Cup semifinal with a resounding victory Marcelo Gallardo’s team had a great night in Mendoza and played well to beat Almagro 2-0, with goals by Rafael Borré and Nacho Scocco.

In a tight match beginning, River took the lead and started to put together some attacking plays, as it has done in the last few matches. The first attempt to score was a deflected header by Javier Pinola out of a corner kick. However, the goal quickly followed.
In a stupendous collective play, Nacho Fernández fired a violent shot at the edge of the penalty area, but the ball hit the crossbar after being deflected by Christian Limousin’s hand. Rafael Borré, catching the rebound and kicked the ball into an empty net, allowing River to open the scoring.
River had the second opportunity after an outstanding individual play: Borre set up Nacho Scocco for a goal and the forward fired a right-footed shot which hit the rival’s right goalpost. The only chance Almagro had was a one-on-one by Facundo Suarez on the left, but Franco Armani reacted very well to the forward’s cross-shot.
At the beginning of the second half, River took the lead even more after Nicolás Arrechea was expelled for fouling Borré. Out of that corner kick, Scocco fired a tremendous shot which was met with a good response by the goalkeeper. In the next two attempts, the rival was able to control shots by Exequiel Palacios and Nacho Fernández.
Another clear situation was a good collective play and a pass towards the center from De La Cruz to Scocco, who stretched himself out and touched the ball, but Limousin controlled it. Then came the second goal, after an exquisite pass from Nacho Fernández to Scocco, who brought the ball down with subtlety and softly kicked the ball after Almagro’s goalkeeper came off his line.
After the second goal, River went for more: Scocco had another one-on-one after a pass by Nacho and then, the goalkeeper blocked a header by Lucas Pratto. After Juan Quintero’s comeback, the Colombian player was close to scoring a goal, with a shot controlled by Limousin and two stupendous free kicks: one was deflected by Limousin and the other one was barely deflected by the left goalpost.
Leonardo Ponzio, who also returned once he overcame his injury, attacked and fired two shots from outside the box. Milton Casco almost scored the third one, with a shot from the left which deflected and hit Almagro’s crossbar. With this result, River awaits his rival for the semi-finals, which will be determined after the match between Colón and Estudiantes de Buenos Aires.
