River loses in League Cup debut

On a vibrant first matchday in La Paternal, Argentinos Juniors won 3-2. River’s goal scorers were Agustín Palavecino and Esequiel Barco.
River and Argentinos had a very dynamic first half, creating many goal scoring situations. The home team threatened with a shot by Javier Cabrera from outside the box and River responded with a good combination play in the attack, but Nacho Fernández failed to strike a right-footed shot off a pass from Miguel Borja. On the next opportunity, the team managed by Gabriel Milito took the lead thanks to a header from Marco Di Cesare, which deflected on Pablo Minissale, throwing off Franco Armani.
Borja escaped on the right and crossed for Esequiel Barco, but his shot fell short. Agustín Palavecino took a right-footed shot at the near post, which was saved low by Alexis Martín Arias, and another shot from outside the box. River's No. 8 scored the well-deserved equalizer, off a good assist from Borja following a cross from Enzo Díaz on the left side.
Next, the Colombian player slipped upfield, but the rival keeper brought him down. Following VAR review, Barco took the penalty: Martín Arias saved the shot, but Barco capitalized on the rebound to set the score at 2-1. Nonetheless, Luciano Gondou scored the equalizer for Argentinos off a free kick from the right side.
In the second half, Armani made an excellent low save on a dangerous volley from Gondou. After recovering the ball in the opponent's half, River responded with a left-footed shot that went high from Matías Kranevitter. Capitalizing on a defensive lapse, Argentinos took the lead again thanks to a goal from Gondou. Even though River felt the blow and found it hard to set itself up, the team almost scored the equalizer with a free kick from Manuel Lanzini, which was saved low, and a right-footed shot from No. 10.
On one of the final plays, Facundo Colidio failed to score after a dribble by Pablo Solari. El Millonario couldn’t win the League Cup debut match, but will seek the first victory next Sunday, playing against Barracas Central at the Mâs Monumental stadium.
