River loses debut match in Santa Fe Marcelo Gallardo's team lost 1-0 against Union, which won the match because of a questionable penalty awarded by Pitana.

The first half was very intense, with both teams setting up threatening plays. River even had a very clear chance in the 2nd minute, with a left-footed shot by Nicolas De La Cruz (off a great pass from Julian Alvarez), but Sebastian Moyano and his right goalpost prevented the scoring from being opened. The home team responded with a crossed volley by Juan Nardoni, and a shot-on-goal from the right-hand side.
Union had a chance to score thanks to a shot by Jonatan Alvarez, who struck a shot at the center of the box aimed directly at the goal. River responded with a very good play set up by Julian on the left-hand side but was saved by the home keeper. Union threatened River’s goal again with a clear shot-on-goal by Mauro Luna Diale; then, Alvez went one on one with Armani but couldn’t beat him. River had a good chance to score at the feet of David Martinez, and De La Cruz scored a goal that was disallowed for a hair's breadth offside.
In the second half, Union was off to a better start and pressed River with two shots-on-goal by Alvez (a weak header and a long-range shot) and a penetrating run by Daniel Juarez, but Armani was on the ball and quickly blocked his effort. Once the first ten minutes had gone by, the home team took the lead after a very questionable penalty awarded by Nestor Pitana. River went for the equalizer, but the final meters proved to be difficult.
Paulo Diaz threatened Moyano’s goal with a deflected header. El Millonario tried its best but failed to even the score and lost its League Cup debut match. On Wednesday, Gallardo’s team will welcome Patronato at the Monumental Stadium on Group B’s second matchday.
