River let it slip at the end

Marcelo Gallardo’s team took a 1-0 lead through Gonzalo Montiel, but Lanús snatched an equalizer late on. Still, River remains unbeaten and on top of its group.

River Plate made the brighter start, settling quickly and creating chances in midfield. Just minutes into the match, Miguel Borja came close to breaking the deadlock after a good run and cross from Matías Galarza on the left. Shortly after, Galarza was denied following a pass from Juan Cruz Meza.

Late in the first half, the match evened out and Lanús threatened River with a few set pieces and a solo run from Marcelino Moreno, which forced Franco Armani into a superb save at his near post. Just before halftime, Juan Portillo latched onto a rebound from a corner, but Nahuel Losada gathered it low.

After the break and some changes, River continued to press Lanús and had two long-range shots from Maxi Salas. From a corner, Giuliano Galoppo arrived at the far post, delivered the ball into the box, and Gonzalo Montiel slotted it home for 1-0. Near the final whistle, the home side equalized with a touch from Rodrigo Castillo.

With this draw, Gallardo’s team stays at the top of the group with twelve points, and will now wait for Thursday’s Copa Argentina last-16 clash against Unión de Santa Fe at the Malvinas Argentinas Stadium in Mendoza.
