The Argentina Cup is one of River Plate’s main objectives and this Thursday, in Mar del Plata, Marcelo Gallardo’s team gave a new step towards the final: it beat Unión by 3-0 and now waits for its rival in semifinals.

River made good use of its presence during the first minutes and there it found the lead: Gonzalo Martínez made a corner from de left and Sebastián Driussi stretched his good moment to put his head and celebrate a new goal.

Unión answered quickly and got the tie, but after a series of rebounds in the area, the rival’s shot went very close to Augusto Batalla’s right goalpost. River answered with a very clear double chance: first, Nereo Fernández blocked a volley to Lucas Alario and, in that rebound, Tomás Andrade wasn’t sharp to score. The last was a corner by Martínez that almost becomes a sensational goal.

In the second half, Unión warned with a free kick by Martín Rolle that hit the crossbar, but River stood firm and once again took advantage of the dead-ball situation: Martínez executed a corner from the left and Joaquín Arzura appeared to put his head and shout the 2-0. The third one arrived towards the end, with Alario’s downward goal, thanks to which el Millonarioadvanced to semifinals.

In the next round, River will play against the winner of the match between San Lorenzo and Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata. Meanwhile, this Sunday it will visit Arsenal in Sarandí for a new round of the local championship.
