ESRiver fails to win away in Cordoba El Millonario lost 1-0 against Talleres, on Matchday 11 of the League Cup. Despite this, Marcelo Gallardo's team is still ranking second in the group.
Both teams found it hard to get into rhythm. Talleres had the most chances in the starting minutes, with two dangerous plays that were disallowed for offside. River responded with good combination plays on the right-hand side, at the feet of Santiago Simon and Tomas Pochettino. In another play, Emanuel Mammana tried to set up Braian Romero for a goal, but the home team's defense blocked the forward's efforts.
Talleres had the first shot on goal thanks to Diego Valoyes, but it went wide. River responded with a tremendous right-footed shot by Agustin Palavecino, which went just wide of one of the goalposts, and a shot by Simon that was saved by Guido Herrera. The home keeper reacted brilliantly to save two consecutive shots from Bruno Zuculini and Jose Paradela; River had a third chance, but Enzo Diaz prevented Mammana from scoring on the line.
A few minutes into the second half, Diaz took a dangerous free kick from the left corner of the penalty box, but his shot went wide. In another play by the home team, Federico Girotti ran up the field on the left-hand side, but his right-footed shot was off-target. Talleres took the lead before the 55th minute with a goal by Valoyes. River tried to recover and threatened Herrera again with a long-range shot by Romero.
Nicolas De La Cruz came onto the field and set up a spectacular solo play, which culminated in a forced right-footed shot that Herrera deflected over the crossbar. Talleres had a second chance to score after a quick run up the field off a corner kick, Girotti went one on one with Armani, but his shot went high. River’s former forward immediately had another chance to score, but he lost the ball on the line.
Despite the loss, el Millonario remains second with 22 points and is still in a strong position to qualify for the next round of the League Cup. River’s next matchday will take place on Sunday, at the Monumental Stadium, against Atletico Tucuman.
