River deserved more against Monterrey

Despite dominating and creating several clear chances, Marcelo Gallardo’s team couldn’t break the deadlock against the Mexican side, drawing 0-0 in the second round of the Club World Cup. A spot in the round of 16 is up for grabs as River faces Inter Milan this Wednesday.

River dominated most of the match in Los Angeles, backed by 35,000 fans who kept cheering non-stop for the full 90 minutes. In the first half, Paulo Díaz, Franco Mastantuono, Giuliano Galoppo, and Lucas Martínez Quarta—who had a clear-cut chance right before the break—were all involved in dangerous plays.

Franco Armani remained solid and composed on the few occasions he was tested, all with long-range efforts. In the second half, River continued to create chances: Galoppo was denied on the goal line after a poor clearance by Esteban Andrada, who later redeemed himself with three key saves against Mastantuono and two more against Miguel Borja, who had come on in the second half.

After this draw, River sits atop the group alongside Inter with four points apiece, leading on goal difference. In the final round of fixtures, River will face the Italian side, aiming to clinch a spot in the round of 16.
