River Couldn’t Do It in Rosario

After the recess due to the South American Qualifying Rounds and with the momentum obtained after beating Quilmes 5-1 on last week’s friendly game, River Plate had a complicated encounter in Rosario as a visitor against Newell’s. River needed to obtain 3 points from this duel so as not to be far from the top of the tournament.

However, El Millonario did not have a good evening in Rosario, and the local team won by the bare minimum. It achieved its victory during the second half thanks to a penalty converted by Ignacio Scocco.

During the first half, Augusto Batalla was responsible for Newell’s not obtaining any advantage: River’s young man blocked three clear plays by Mauro Formica, Fabricio Formiliano and Scocco. On the other hand, Luciano Pocrnjic stopped Sebastián Driussi’s header without any problems.

On the second half, the local team obtained its advantage after Silvio Trucco called a penalty due to a supposed hand by Camilo Mayada. Scoccohit a powerful shot to the center and scored 1-0. River had the intention, but wasn’t clear in the last meters: it only made the rival goalkeeper nervouswith a diverted header by Lucas Alario and a one-on-one with Marcelo Larrondo, who wasn’t able to define it comfortably.

Whit this result, River is 10 points behind from Estudiantes, the leader of the tournament. On the next game, River will receive Huracán on Sunday, November 27th, in the Monumental Stadium, and waits for the confirmation for the date of the semifinal of the Argentine Cup against Gimnasia y Esgrimade La Plata.
