Unbelievable. Historic. Every adjective falls short to define what this night in Córdoba was for River. El Millonario demonstrated that the news did not cover up history, did not cover up the hard work, neither the dedication, nor the sacrifice, nor the humility, nor the greatness: the two major objectives set for the semester were met: Recopa Sudamericana and Argentina Cup.
River moved forward with firm steps in each round and crowned it tonight at the Mario Alberto Kempes Stadium, with an amazing Lucas Alario and an opportunistic Iván Alonso (back after his injury), who went in during the final part and became a key character for victory.
The night began well and turned black in two opportunities. River was winning with a penalty goal from Alario and, after just some minutes, it was losing 2-1, to finally go to half time with a well-deserved 2-2 that was also scored by the forward, both being penalty kicks.
During the second half, Central struck once again and it was then that Alonso appeared, after having just gone in, to put the ball down for Alario to score his third goal. Immediately afterwards, it was the 13 who put the ball down for the Uruguayan to write, with the tip of one of his football shoes, his name on River’s history.
It was 4-3, it was a celebration, it was a relief. It was the satisfaction of having reached the objectives, of having closed the year with a smile that goes beyond a match for the local tournament. River gained a new title, gave a new lap of honor in this successful management. And it won its place in the Copa Libertadores de América next year, but there will be time for that. Now, everything is a celebration. The Argentina Cup belongs to River.
