River commemorated a new year of life and had a grand style celebration in the Monumental Stadium. The 116 years of The Greatest, commemorated on this Thursday, May 25, began early in the Stadium’s surroundings: a lot of color, grouped fans, shirts, flags and chants were the protagonists in the build-up of the match against Independiente Medellín, for the Copa Libertadores.
After the doors of the Antonio Vespucio Liberti Stadium opened and the River Plate fans settled themselves on a grey (but nevertheless festive and lively) Autumn afternoon, the celebration, hosted by Mariano Iudica, began: representatives of different disciplines and activities, sportsmen and sportswomen, students of the Institute and of the University Institute paraded before the crowd. In addition, the musicians Lito Vitale, Daniel "Pipi" Piazzolla and Joaquín Levinton (leader of the band Turf) played together the Argentine National Anthem (on the day of the commemoration of the First National Government) and closed with River’s Anthem.
Then, the president of the Institution, Rodolfo D'Onofrio, went in accompanied by the vice presidents, Jorge Brito and Matías Patanian, and the president of the CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez, who was given a commemorative plaque; besides, they received a bunting allusive to the date. Moreover, and after watching the institutional video for a new year of greatness, members of the Fans Subcommittee created a white and red patchwork with the number 116.
To finish, Levinton sang River’s version of "Pasos al costado", together with all the Monumental Stadium cheering and waiting for the arrival of the players to initiate the match.
