Focused on setting the pace of the game, River pressed Newell’s at the start of the match, but dangerous plays were long in coming. The home team had two shots on goal: Cristian Lema deflected a header and Francisco Gonzalez struck a long-range shot that went high.

Julian Alvarez pressed Newell’s when keeper Ivan Arboleda came off his line, and River had a very clear scoring chance: After a deadly counterattack on the left-hand side, Santiago Simon caught a rebound, got in the right position inside the box, and smashed a right-footed shot against the keeper's left post. Enzo Fernandez took a free kick that went just wide of the goal.

In the opening minutes of the second half, River had another goal prevented by one of the goalposts: Fernandez smashed a shot against Arboleda’s right post off a good backward pass Elias Gomez on the left-hand side. River had a very clear chance to score: Esequiel Barco recovered the ball in the attack and opened up a pass for Juan Quintero, but Quintero's shot deflected. Newell’s threatened River's goal with a long-range shot but Franco Armani saved it.

Gallardo’s team kept trying to score and was close to benefiting from a bad clearance by the home team. Alvarez recovered the ball and tapped it to Barco, who struck a right-footed shot nearly at the edge of the penalty box, but Arboleda was in the right place to save it. After so many shots-on goals, River finally scored: River’s forwards pressed Newell’s defense once again, the keeper made a clearance error, and Quintero tapped a left-footed shot, setting the score at 1-0.

River made the most of this momentum and didn't take long to set the score at 2-0. Once more, thanks to a quick penetrating run, the players tapped their way into the rival side of the field, and Robert Rojas struck a shot that Arboleda failed to save, scoring River’s second goal of the night. The match went smoothly for el Millonario, who had its second win in a row. On the next matchday, River will welcome Racing at the Monumental Stadium.
