Argentina started off strong and, within two minutes, had the first chance with Julián Álvarez shooting just over the bar. Shortly after, following a scramble, the former River Plate forward sent another shot high from the heart of the box. Argentina kept pressing for the first goal and came close with a header from Nicolás González, which Gabriel Arias managed to save.
In a tightly contested match with lots of midfield tussles, Chile had a great chance late in the first half when Matías Catalán's cross-header smashed against Dibu Martínez’s left post. Just before halftime, Alexis Mac Allister couldn’t get his shot from the edge of the penalty area on target.
Less than three minutes into the second half, Argentina took a 1-0 lead with a well-executed play on the right: Julián delivered the pass, Lautaro Martínez made a no-touch assist, and Mac Allister finished with a low right-footed shot into Arias’s left post. Scaloni’s team controlled the game without any real scares. In the final stretch, Julián struck an amazing left-footed shot for the second goal, and Paulo Dybala capped off the rout with a shot at Arias’s near post.
With this win, Argentina now has 18 points in the South American Qualifiers and will be the sole leader at the end of the round, regardless of other results. In the eighth round, the team will face Colombia on Tuesday as the visitors.
