After a very tight beginning, River opened the scoring with the first dangerous play: After a great collective play that began with a goal kick, Nicolás De La Cruz located Fabrizio Angileri on the left side and the winger fired a low cross towards Federico Girotti. The youth player threw himself on the floor and scored the first goal for el Millonario.

The young forward was close to scoring the second goal, but wasn’t able to get comfortable when entering the area. In the defense, Franco Armani responded quickly to a backheel shot by Santiago Vergini. A few minutes later, the winning formula was repeated on the right side: Agustín Palavecino made a pass to Gonzalo Montiel and the defender fired a cross backwards for Girotti to celebrate again.

River kept trying and Julián Álvarez almost set the score at 3-0 after a good assist by Lucas Beltrán. Towards the end of the first half, Armani responded very well to a powerful shot by Marcelo Ortiz off a free kick.

In the second half, el Más Grande made two penetrating runs in a row: in the first one, Beltrán waited for Montiel to do an overlapping run on the right and passed him the ball, but the defender’s cross didn’t meet Girotti in the goal area. In the next play, Beltrán captured the ball by the far post and fired a right-footed shot that went high over the crossbar.

Álvarez took a free kick on the left side and made a shot on goal that deflected off Lucchetti’s right post. When River was dominating and was practically having no trouble with the defense, Leonardo Heredia positioned himself in the area and scored, reducing the deficit thanks to a low left-footed shot.

Atlético Tucumán made some penetrating runs that disturbed Armani, but the goalkeeper responded well to both: a shot by Ramiro Carrera and a header by Marcelo Ortiz. Close to the end, De La Cruz fired a crossed left-footed shot that narrowly missed the rival goal. Given this victory, River will now face Boca Juniors in the Round of 16. In the meantime, its next match will be on Sunday, against Colón, for the League Cup.
