River was determined to take the lead and score the goal it needed, after drawing 1-1 in the first leg. Controlling the ball in the midfield, el Millonario started threatening the rival’s goal with long passes to Matias Suarez; thus, the first goal scoring opportunity was created, after a foul on Braian Romero and Nicolas De La Cruz’s high free kick. In the next play, Romero found Jorge Carrascal, but the Colombian player missed the goal.

Off a corner kick, No. 19 won the header in the goal area and almost set the score at 1-0. De La Cruz had another chance, through a deflected shot; then, the long-awaited goal was scored. Romero made an amazing goal: he won the ball, being ready to take advantage of Carlos Quintana’s mistake, after a pass from Suarez, and fired an impressive right-footed shot that went into Lucas Chaves’s left corner.

River didn't yield control of the game and was threatened by the home team only once throughout the first half: Argentinos Juniors took advantage of a defensive lapse when River was clearing the ball from the goal area, but Franco Armani reacted well to block Gabriel Hauche’s shot.

El Millonario didn’t change its mindset when the second half began. First, it threatened the opposing team with penetrating runs by Enzo Perez and a backheel shot by Romero. Then, after a great attacking play, Suarez found Romero all alone and the forward scored his second goal, practically sealing the series. River’s No. 7 had his chance, and, after controlling a long pass, Carrascal scored the third goal, which was disallowed due to a handball following VAR review.

Gallardo’s team stood firm until the end, its defense wasn’t disturbed, and it created situations to widen the lead. Thus, River rounded off a great night and, once again, positioned itself among the continent’s top clubs.

In the quarterfinals, el Millonario will play against Atletico Mineiro, which has just eliminated Boca Juniors. The first leg will take place at the Monumental Stadium and the winner of the bracket will be determined in Brazil. Meanwhile, River's next match will be on Sunday, against Union de Santa Fe, on matchday 2 of the local tournament.
