On Monday, January 31st, River Plate and Manchester City have sealed an agreement on the transfer for Julian Alvarez, one of the key figures of Argentine football and a key piece for the titles won by el Mas Grande in 2021. The goal scorer will continue to wear the River jersey, at least until July of this year.

“For us, it is a source of pride that one of the most important clubs in the world has shown interest in a player like Julian Alvarez, trained by River since 2015, who represents how all the players churned by our Lower Divisions play and are as people,” highlighted Jorge Brito, President of Club Atletico River Plate, at the contract signing. “It is a milestone marking the beginning of a relationship between River Plate and Manchester City, that we hope will be very fruitful for both teams.”

“We have been observing Julian for some time now,” said Txiki Begiristain, Manchester City’s Director of Football. “He is capable of playing in several attacking roles and we firmly believe that he is one of the best youth forwards in South America. I am very happy that we have managed to bring him to Manchester City. I truly believe that we can provide him with the right conditions for him to reach his full potential and become one of the top players in the world.” Julian Alvarez arrived at River at the end of 2015, made his senior debut in 2018, and that same year, had the privilege of playing the historic CONMEBOL Libertadores final against Boca Juniors at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium. From then onwards, he has underpinned his role as forward, thanks to his professionalism and commitment to the team, until becoming a key player in Marcelo Gallardo’s team at 21 years old, winning three championships last year.

In 2021, Julian was also the top scorer in the Professional Football League and was part of the Argentina National Team that won the CONMEBOL Copa America in Brazil. His great performance made a significant impact around the football world.
