As usual, el Millonario set up plays right from the start and immediately threatened Ezequiel Unsain’s goal. The first two scoring chances consisted in a cross followed by a deflected header, one by Braian Romero and the other by Robert Rojas by the far post. Then, off a good move by Enzo Fernandez, Julian Alvarez passed the ball to Romero, who failed to connect.
Fernandez opened the scoring by sending a great header into the net off a cross from Milton Casco on the left-hand side. Gallardo’s team was close to widening the lead thanks to a few shots on goal by Romero. Meanwhile, Franco Armani reacted brilliantly to block a left-footed shot by Francisco Pizzini.
River started the second half with the same idea in mind and was close to setting the score at 2-0 with a good left-footed crossed shot by Romero off a pass from Casco. On an attacking play by Defensa y Justicia, Walter Bou took advantage of a good pass from Carlos Rotondi to the heart of the box and evened the score. Romero had another clear chance to score, but his header was saved by Unsain.
Defensa y Justicia took advantage of another quick clearance and Pizzini set up Miguel Merentiel, who lashed a crossed shot with Armani off his line, setting the score at 2-1. However, a few minutes later, Romero was finally able to score: He collected a rebound on a shot by Agustin Palavecino and fired low into the net, setting the score at 2-2. Toward the end, Romero had another scoring chance and Leonardo Ponzio, who was cheered on throughout the match, tried from outside the box.
Five minutes before the end, Franco Paredes came running up the right-hand side and fired a crossed shot, claiming a 3-2 win for Defensa y Justicia. River will finish the Professional League championship playing in Tucuman, against Atletico. The team will then play against Colon for the Champions Trophy, on Sunday 18th, in Santiago del Estero.
