After securing a spot in the CONMEBOL Libertadores quarter-finals, River hosted Newell’s aiming to climb the league table. In a tightly contested start, Facundo Colidio had the first chance with a right-footed shot from outside the box that Lucas Hoyos saved low. In another attempt on the right, Fabricio Bustos couldn’t get the ball to Miguel Borja in the goal area.
The away team responded with a dangerous free kick by Matko Miljevic that missed the target, but River had the most dangerous chances: Germán Pezzella won a header from a set piece, and later, after a great team move, Franco Mastantuono cut inside at the edge of the box and fired a left-footed shot over Newell’s goal.
At the start of the second half, River had the upper hand again, just like in the first half. Claudio Echeverri had a clear chance within the first ten minutes, but his shot lacked power and was easily saved low by Hoyos. In another clear-cut chance, Borja positioned himself well in the box and managed to poke the ball, but the rival keeper quickly closed him down.
Toward the end, Meza received a through ball from Manuel Lanzini and was in a one-on-one situation: he tried to set up Borja, but his pass fell short. This draw prevented River from moving up the table, leaving the team with 17 points in the league. Next Sunday, River will play against Independiente in Avellaneda.
