Estudiantes was off to a better start on the field and River couldn’t take over. Therefore, the first dangerous situations were created by the home team. First, Fernando Zuqui challenged Franco Armani with a long-range shot and then, River’s captain made a spectacular save: Gustavo Del Prete set up a play on the left side, Leonardo Godoy ran into the goal area and struck a low shot, forcing the keeper to react.
Meanwhile, River started to create situations thanks to Enzo Fernandez, who set up Julian Alvarez to run up the right side, striking a low cross that Benjamin Rollheiser failed to catch. On another penetrating run by Estudiantes, Godoy struck a long-range shot that missed the target. El Millonario threatened Estudiantes again through Agustin Palavecino and Fernandez. Julian had a clear scoring chance at his feet, with a crossed right-footed shot saved by Mariano Andujar.
On the last play of the first half, off a great shot by Palavecino from the left side, Robert Rojas ran into the center of the box and headed the ball into the goal, beating the keeper and setting the score at 1-0. As against Talleres in Cordoba, the Paraguayan defender was a key part of the set piece which opened the scoring.
The teams had an even start to the second half, with River controlling the ball smoothly, but in the 5th minute, Leandro Diaz went one-on-one with Armani off a bad clearance and struck a low shot, setting the score at 1-1. Estudiantes tried to make the most of this momentum and almost scored the second goal thanks to Diaz, but River’s keeper reacted well.
El Millonario had a good chance to take the lead thanks to Alvarez, and Armani made a brilliant save by the left post, blocking a header from Agustin Rogel. River had a chance to score the second goal at Braian Romero’s feet, off a cross from Julian, but his right-footed shot went high over the crossbar. On another play, Julian collected a rebound in the box, but his left-footed shot was off-target.
Armani made another great save on a shot from Diaz. River went for the win and Alvarez made several scoring attempts, but they lacked the final touch. With this draw, Gallardo's team remains as the sole leader, seven points clear of the runner-up. On the next matchday, it will welcome Patronato at the Monumental Stadium.
