Banfield came out pressing in the opening seconds of the match and forced an excellent save from Franco Armani: parrying the ball away out of pure reflex, he denied a goal from Milton Giménez, who had executed an acrobatic move in the penalty area. In the following play, Juan Bisanz couldn't shoot on goal off a cross from the right. River responded with two attempts by Salomón Rondón and one by Pablo Solari.

The home team had their chance again through Giménez, and then River took a 1-0 lead: after a good team play, Rondón turned and unleashed a right-footed shot that was cleared off the line by a Banfield defender, only for it to bounce off Solari and open the scoring. Before the end of the first half, Armani responded brilliantly to a header from Giménez, and Ramiro Funes Mori headed over the bar from a great free-kick by Manuel Lanzini.

At the beginning of the second half, Rondón made a run into the opposing half and took a left-footed shot, but he missed the goal and failed to trouble the keeper. The Venezuelan forward was quick to head the ball low from a free-kick, but his shot was collected by Cambeses. At around the 65th minute, Banfield leveled the score with a goal from Ignacio Rodríguez. With 15 minutes left, Armani came up big once again and denied Juan Álvarez's second attempt.

River struggled to link up in attack and couldn't find the avenues to trouble the home goalkeeper. With this draw, Demichelis' team now sits with ten points in Group A of the League Cup. Next Sunday, Argentina’s derby, the “Superclásico”, will take place at Boca Juniors' stadium.
