In the opening minutes, Pablo Solari was involved in a controversial play in the home team’s box, prompting referee Andrés Merlos to check the VAR for a possible handball by Miguel Brizuela, but he ultimately decided not to call it. River took control of the game, with Facundo Colidio forcing a good save, followed by a dangerous cross from Marcos Acuña after a brilliant play by Rodrigo Villagra.
Instituto barely threatened with long passes, but in a fast counterattack, the home team took a 1-0 lead with a finish from Gregorio Rodríguez around the 23rd minute. River responded with several clear chances to equalize: a free kick from Meza that went just wide, a one-on-one for Colidio, and dangerous shots from outside the box by Claudio Echeverri and Santiago Simón (the latter hitting the left post of Manuel Roffo).
In the first five minutes of the second half, River had a clear chance to equalize with a header from Meza, but Roffo pulled off an excellent save. After relentless pressure, River found the equalizer with a goal from Solari, following a rebound off the keeper after a shot from Meza. Soon after, River scored the second goal: following a corner from the right, Paulo Díaz won the header, and his effort deflected off Brizuela for a 2-1 lead.
At River’s best moment, with Instituto creating no real danger, Jonás Acevedo made a run into the heart of the box and set up a first-time finish to make it 2-2. Ten minutes before the final whistle, Gonzalo Martínez delivered a brilliant assist to Colidio, who calmly finished with his left foot for a 3-2 lead, securing a great win for River. El Millonario will now look ahead to Sunday’s home match against Barracas Central.
