River embarked on its LPF CUP journey. At Independiente’s stadium, el Millionario decided to take the lead against Banfield and didn’t take long to bring about the first threatening situations. Nacho Fernández made a warning from outside the area, but his shot rebounded on Luciano Lollo; then Rafael Borré jumped higher than everyone to catch a corner kick by Nicolás De La Cruz and scored the first goal. He also celebrated his 41st goal for el Más Grande.

Banfield responded with two attacks: a shot by Martín Payero which was controlled by Franco Armani and a spectacular save by the goalkeeper on Agustín Fontana’s shot. However, this rival forward evened the score by means of a header. River kept on dominating and playing on Banfield’s side. Nacho had the chance to score the second goal, but the team from the south of Buenos Aires took the lead by means of another header, this time by Giuliano Galoppo.

In the second half, el Millionario went looking for a tie. It was close to getting it after some attempts by De La Cruz and Nacho Fernández, but Banfield got the third after an own goal. Still, River didn’t give up and brought about opportunities to score. As in the case of Lucas Pratto, after a pass from De La Cruz; Santiago Sosa, with a left-footed shot deflected by a rival defender; and Borré, with a header blocked by the goalkeeper.

River wasn’t able to start the LPF Cup with a victory. On the second matchday, this Saturday, it will welcome Rosario Central (which has just beaten Godoy Cruz).
